  14.            PRESIDENT NAMES FISH AND WILDLIFE OFFICIALS
  15.  
  16. (Washington, DC)    President Clinton announced today his 
  17. intention to nominate Molly H. Beattie, the director of a Vermont 
  18. public policy center and former state natural resources official, 
  19. to be Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  In 
  20. addition, the President announced that his longtime environmental 
  21. aide Kenneth Smith has been appointed the Fish and Wildlife 
  22. Service's Deputy Director.

  24.      "Secretary Babbitt and I have placed a high priority on 
  25. finding new ways to protect biological diversity without 
  26. endangering economic growth," said the President.  "The Fish and 
  27. Wildlife Service will play a big role in that process.   I have 
  28. full confidence in the ability of Molly Beattie and Ken Smith to 
  29. do the hard work and the fresh thinking that needs to be done."

  31.      Molly Beattie has been Executive Director of the Richard A. 
  32. Snelling Center for Government since its inception in 1991.  She 
  33. had previously been Deputy Secretary of the State of Vermont's 
  34. Agency of Natural Resources, with particular responsibility for 
  35. forestry, fish, wildlife, and public lands.  Beattie also served 
  36. from 1985-89 as Vermont's Commissioner of Forests, Parks and 
  37. Recreation, and from 1983-85 as Program Director for the Windham 
  38. Foundation, a private foundation which conducts seminars on 
  39. issues facing Vermont and which manages more than 1,000 acres of 
  40. land.  She has additional experience as a forester, an Outward 
  41. Bound instructor, and a news reporter.  She holds a bachelors 
  42. degree from Marymount College, a masters in Forestry from the 
  43. University of Vermont, and a masters in public administration 
  44. from the Kennedy School of Government.

  46.      Kenneth Smith was a Special Assistant to then-Governor Bill 
  47. Clinton from 1989 until Clinton resigned that office in 1992.  He 
  48. advised Clinton on a variety of environmental issues and 
  49. coordinated the actions of Arkansas' natural resource agencies, 
  50. as well as working with federal agencies including the Fish and 
  51. Wildlife Service.  Smith had previously been Chief of Research 
  52. for the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, Program Coordinator 
  53. for The Nature Conservancy, and   a science teacher in the 
  54. Jonesboro public schools.  He holds a B.S. from Southern Arkansas 
  55. University and an M.S. from Arkansas State University.
